White wines in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux is more famous for its lush red wines, but few realize that the region also produces dry, crisp, floral white wine.

Bordeaux has an extensive range of excellent white wines, from everyday classics to top quality fine wines. There are popular wines from all over the regions of France, as well as the rest of the world which leaves you spoilt for choice but sure to find something new to suit your taste. Definitely worth a mention is the superb white wine from New Zealand’s Mission Estate.

In 1855, the castle of Bordeaux was classified; this classification remains being widely used today. Starting from 1875–1892 almost all Bordeaux vineyards were ruined by Phylloxera infestations. The region’s wine industries were rescued by grafting native wines on to pest-resistant American rootstock.

Major production of white wine

White wine in Bordeaux is predominantly and exclusively in the case of sweet Sauternes, made from Sémillon, Sauvignon white and Muscadelle. Typical blends are usually 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon white. As with the reds, white Bordeaux wines are usually blended, most commonly of Sémillon and a smaller amount of Sauvignon white. Other permitted grape varieties are Sauvignon Gris, Ugni white, Colombard, Merlot white, Ondencand Mauzac.

In the late 1960s, Sémillon was the most planted grape in the city of Bordeaux. Since then it has been a constant decline, although it is still the most common of Bordeaux’s white grapes. Sauvignon white’s popularity, on the other hand, has been rising, overtaking “Ugni white” to be the second most planted white Bordeaux grape in the late 1980’s and now being grown in the area more than half the size of the lower yielding Semillon.

Wineries all over the world desire to make wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed the Meritage Association to grant wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in around 18 states and 5 other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel and Mexico.

Dry white wines in Bordeaux

Dry white wines are made throughout the region, using the regional appellation Bordeaux White, often from 100% Sauvignon white or a blend dominated by Sauvignon white and Sémillon. The Bordeaux white AOC is used for wines made in epithet that only allow red wines. Dry whites from Graves are the most well-known and it is the only sub-region with a grouping for dry white wines. The better versions tend to have a significant oak influence. In 2007, 7.8 percent of the region’s vineyard surfaces were used for wines in this family.

Sweet white wines of Bordeaux

In several locations and designations throughout the region, sweet white wine is made from Sémillon, Sauvignon white and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble decay. The best-known of these appellations is Sauternes, which also has an official classification, where some of the world’s most popular sweet wines are produced. There are also titles neighbouring Sauternes, on both sides of Garonne River where similar wines are being made.

These include Loupiac, Cadillac, and Sainte Croix du Mont. The regional designation for sweet white wines is Bordeaux Supérieur white wine. In 2007, 3.2% of the region’s vineyard surface was used for wines in this family. The vast seniority of Bordeaux wine is red, with red wine production is outnumbering white wine making from six to one.

Making of Red Wine

Red Bordeaux is usually made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère. Today Carménère is not mostly used, with Clerc Milon castle which is a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère wines.

As a very broad generalization, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux’s second-most planted a variety of grape dominates the blend in red wines produced in the Médoc and the rest of the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Typically top-quality Castle blends are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. This is exactly referred to as the “Bordeaux Blend.” Merlot tends to predominate in Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and the other right bank titles. These Right Bank blends from top-quality Castles are typically 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Significance of grapes in red wine

While there are both red and white Bordeaux, the name Bordeaux is basically associated with the red wine blend. Red Bordeaux is the red wine that is always made from blending Cabernet Sauvignon wine and Merlot wine will be together even though the proportion of each depends on the location of the winery that made the wine. Red Bordeaux Blends are known for their powerful structure and deep flavors.

Dark fruits, berries such as plum and blackcurrant are more commonly used to describe the flavors of red Bordeaux, although there is an unlimited range of terms that have been assigned to them. Tannins tend to be relatively high in these wines, giving them a firm structure.

Prominence of Bordeaux red wines

Flexibility and a useful vagueness are key assets of the term “Bordeaux Blend”, but are also its Achilles’ heel; if it becomes too broad or too wide use it will lose its meaning. Is a Bordeaux Blend is still a Bordeaux Blend if it contains Zinfandel, Sangiovese or Syrah?

Lacking a formal definition to go by, the answer to that question lies wholly in the collective consciousness of those who use this phrase. Provided that Bordeaux’s vignerons not turn up a new grape variety (Cabernet Sauvignon is only a few hundred years old), the term’s definition remains fairly clear.

The red Bordeaux style has reached almost every winegrowing country, with new candidates looking to imitate Bordeaux’s success. North and South America, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand all have their own expressions of Bordeaux Blend. Even countries in North Africa side and the Middle East produce their own interpretations of the style.

Island of re is being variously called as Rhe, Rhéa and more popularly known as the Isle of Rhé. It is an island off the west coast of France near the Rochelle, on the northern side of the Pertuis of Antioch strait.

The island’s highest point has an elevation of about 20 metres. The island is 30 kilometres that are 19 miles long and 5 kilometres wide. The bridge of re island is 2.9 km was completed in 1988 connects it to La Rochelle on the mainland.

About Pauillac wine region

Pauillac wine region is located south of St-Estephe. The area around Pauillac has the highest advancement of the Medoc with the estates of Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Pontet-Canet sitting on a summit of 30m. Vineyards in Pauillac are not as exploded as most of the Medoc, with its entire slopes and plateaus belonging to a single estate. Pauillac is in the left bank of Gironde River in Medoc wine regions of Bordeaux.

The area of Pauillac contains three of the first five growth estates of Bordeaux. These are Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Latour and Chateau Mouton Rothschild. This area also involves 15 other classed growths!

About wine grapes in Pauillac

Cabernet Sauvignon is the leading grape, but it is invariably blended with other grapes. As with all red Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Little Verdot and Malbec may also be included in the blend. Prior to the 19th century, Malbec was the leading grape variety. The style has been described as ‘stark’. The primary fruit flavour is usually blackcurrant, sometimes veering into a plum. Pencil shavings and cigar box were also characteristic notes.

Wine from Pauillac may be labelled as Haut-Medoc, the usual wine which the castle considers inferior to its main offering and wishes to market under a different label. Similarly, second or third wines from the grand castle will be labelled simply as Pauillac.

Blaye’s fort and outwork of Vauban is a typical work of military architecture in the western side. Blaye’s citadel is listed as a World Heritage Site, since the year 2008.

A great work by the famous military engineer Vauban named Bolt of the Estuary is found on the either side of Gironde to protect Bordeaux from foreign naval attacks. It consists of three outworks: the fort of Blaye on the right bank, Fort Pate in the middle of an island and Fort Medoc on the left bank. The Gironde estuary has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the 11 other citadels making up the utmost Vauban’s sites.

Pleasant features of Gironde estuary

This estuary is formed by the meeting of Garonne and Dordogne rivers, the Gironde river flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest estuary in Europe. This unique found in the middle naturally includes a region of nine islands. Some of these are accessible during the tourists season on a journey leaving from Blaye’s citadel. There are enormous bird species living in the Gironde estuary.
